Research proves bacteria reduction in metal plates
Post-surgical infection in patients has been a growing concern. Recent research (2016) conducted by well-respected Toronto medical and research facilities in partnership with our Canadian TTS affiliate used blinded, random testing to measure bacteria in the biofilm that develops on the surfaces of stainless steel and titanium plates.
Results showed fewer bacteria grew on plates pretreated with Thermal Cycling. They also demonstrated improved wear and strength in addition to better resistance to corrosion.
This research was conducted by the University of Toronto Departments of Medical Biophysics and Surgery, University Health Network Technical Institute, and Sunnybrook Research Institute.
Research demonstrates extended medical tool life
Scientists found reduced wear on orthopedic drill bits treated with TTS Thermal Cycling and felt that if it was applied to other surgical tools like saw blades and reamers - there could be significant savings in operating room budgets. They found the treated drill bits to have “…performances significantly superior to that of standard drill bits, with respect to work, maximum force, and torque.”
They identified these benefits:
Treated drill bits wear at less than half the rate of untreated ones
Potential to decrease surgical time and frustration
Significant reduction in thermal necrosis
This research was conducted in 2015 by the University of Toronto Department of Orthopedic Surgery, the Sunnybrook Research Institute Orthopedic Biomechanics Lab, and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto.
